Cancer Screenings for Charles County, MD Residents

Breast & Cervical Cancer Screening

The BCCP program provides breast and cervical cancer screening services to low income, uninsured or underinsured women. The program will pay for an annual clinical breast examination, annual mammogram and pap smears, as needed, for women 40 -64 years of age and for women over 65, if they do not have Medicare Part B. Participants in the program must be Maryland residents with family incomes less than 250% of the federal poverty level and not have insurance with screening benefits.

Colorectal Cancer

Colon cancer is the 2nd leading cause of death among men and woman in the U.S. However, it is the most preventable with periodic screening. The Charles County Health Department has a colon cancer screening program for eligible men and woman, ages 50-64, with no or little insurance, who live in Charles County.

Men in Charles County have highest prostate cancer diagnosis and death rates in the state, and significantly above the national average. Local rates are climbing even as cases level off nationwide. Children with Special Needs Case Management

The Children's Medical Services provides care coordination for uninsured, low income children with severe, chronic or handicapping health conditions by linking them with specialists and coordinating their care. The State provides a grant to the County, which funds the Care Coordinator through the Care for Kids Program. The Care Coordinator, located at the Primary Care Coalition, works closely with Care for Kids families and primary care providers to assist them in completing the application and referrals.

Care for Kids

Care for Kids, is a Montgomery County funded program administered by the Primary Care Coalition. The Program offers a solution for needy families by providing a “medical home” for uninsured children where they can receive well and sick care, prescription and limited specialty care. Through partnerships and subcontracts with Kaiser Permanente, Community Clinic Inc., private doctors, hospitals, and other health care providers and organizations, Care for Kids promotes a continuity of care that encourages low-income families to maintain and improve their health status.

InovaCares Clinic for Children provides primary pediatric care for children of low income families with incomes up to 300% of the federal poverty line (FPL). Services include well-child care, immunizations, and sick care for children from birth through 18 years of age.

The clinic also provides annual physicals for school and sports activities. The center is staffed with pediatricians and nurse practitioners.

Free prostate screening is offered free of charge to men 40 years of age or older. Services offered include a digital rectal examination and a blood test for prostate specific antigen (PSA). Men are also provided with education materials.

In March 2009, the Men Take Ten Program received a Community Investment Grant from the American Cancer Society to educate men about their prostate cancer screening options and the importance of informed consent.

Free prostate cancer screenings for men in the DC metro area are provided:

The screenings are offered by the GW Hospital, GW Cancer Institute, GW Medical Faculty Associates and the GW Medical Center.

The test includes a digital rectal exam and a blood test to measure prostate-specific antigen (PSA), a blood protein that may indicate cancer. Participants will know their PSA results immediately. Space is limited, so register today!

Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm Screening Program - Georgetown University Hospital

Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm Screening Programs

Through a generous grant from Medtronic Inc., the Division of Vascular Surgery offers free peripheral vascular disease screening programs conducted by Life Line Screening.

Georgetown University Hospital offer free Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm Screenings every three months. These screenings are free for qualifying patients over the age of 50.

Screenings are fast, painless and low cost. They involve the use of ultrasound technology, and scan for potential health problems related to: blocked arteries which can lead to a stroke, aortic aneurysms

Also offered for men and women, is a bone density screening to assess their risk for osteoporosis.

Breast and Cervical Cancer Program - PROJECT WISH - DC Residents

The District of Columbia ranks highest of all states in the US for breast and cervical cancer mortality. The mission of the DC Breast and Cervical Cancer Early Detection Program (DC BCCEDP) is to reduce the District’s breast, cervical, and ovarian cancer burden through the provision of health education, technical expertise, case management, and coordination of early detection services for District residents.

Project WISH (Women Into Staying Healthy), is a multi-faceted program funded by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), which provides free cancer education, screening, and diagnostic services to low-income District women with little or no health insurance.

Currently, Project WISH is enrolling eligible women ages 50 and over into the program for breast and cervical cancer screening. Services covered by Project WISH include an annual mammogram, a Pap test, a clinical breast exam and related diagnostic services at one of our area providers.

Free transportation and interpreter services are available for appointments. Women can apply for Project WISH at participating clinics and hospitals throughout the city or by contacting Project WISH directly at:

Affordable Primary Health Care - Holy Cross Hospital, Montgomery County, MD

Health Center for the Uninsured

Holy Cross Hospital opened two health centers – in Silver Spring and in Gaithersburg – to bring affordable health care to uninsured adults.

Some health center patients have never before received care for their simple or complex health problems. Others have not maintained their health because they lack the money or insurance needed to consistently afford medications.

The centers offer various educational programs and resources to help patients manage high blood pressure, diabetes and other chronic conditions. Individual instruction, group education, and low-literacy, culturally competent written materials are available onsite.

The Holy Cross Hospital Health Center at Montgomery College in Silver SpringThe Holy Cross Hospital Health Center at Montgomery College opened in 2004 to bring affordable primary health care to those who needed it most – low-income, uninsured adults. Now this unique center accommodates more than 6,000 patient visits per year.

This state-of-the-art center is a “medical home” for adults in Silver Spring and surrounding areas who are not able to access primary care elsewhere. Skilled clinicians provide emergency room follow-up, physical exams, chronic disease management and care for patients discharged from the hospital. The staff speaks English, French and Spanish, and offers interpretation in other languages.
